Ankara (formerly called Angora) is the capital of Turkey. Serving as the capital of the Roman province of Galatia, the city is very old, with various Hattian, Hittite, Lydian, Phrygian, Galatian, Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman archeological sites. As such, there are well-preserved examples of Roman and Ottoman architecture throughout the city, the most remarkable being the Temple of Augustus and Rome that boasts the Monumentum Ancyranum, the inscription recording the Res Gestae Divi Augusti.

Ankara was referenced in at least two episodes of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?:

  • The Gateway Getaway: fez hat, Roman temples, and Muslim mosques
    • During the Lightning Round (set in Turkey itself), Greg Lee asks questions about Turkish cuisine, the Trojan war, and seas bordering Turkey.
  • Greasy Getaway: oil wrestling
    • During the Lightning Round, Greg Lee asks questions about the Ottoman Empire and Sufi Islam.
